STEM SUMMER ADVENTURE August 19 – 23, 2013
What: The STEM Summer Adventure is a 5-day extended field program happening the week before school starts. New Boise State Students planning to study the fields of science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) will get a chance to meet other students, make friends, and engage with STEM faculty. The summer adventure is a math-science learning experience that uses outdoor-based activities as a fun laboratory for learning.
Summer Adventure participants will be traveling via rafts and camping on the Payette River north of Boise. Program faculty, scientists and outdoor instructors will use activities and group facilitation to focus on community building, forming new relationships and learning about the geology, astronomy, hydrology, wildlife and human history of the Payette River Basin. Along the way, we will have fun doing science-based activities to see how scientific reasoning applies to the real world. The selected river stretch and outdoor activities are designed to accommodate participants that are new to rafting and outdoor camping. On the final day there will be a campus workshop focused on acquainting the STEM students with both the campus and downtown Boise.
Who: The STEM Summer Adventure is designed for incoming first-year students majoring in science, engineering, or mathematics (STEM). Space is limited to 27 students, apply as soon as possible. The trip is limited to the first 27 STEM students who apply. This program is funded via a National Science Foundation grant.
